Your phone contract is about to expire and the operator strongly encourages you to sign a new one? You don’t have to do that. And you will not lose access to calls, text messages and the Internet. There are other options to choose from, and each has its own advantages.

Shortly before the end of the contract, we can expect a call from your operator. Consultants of telecommunications companies are very keen that we decide on a new commitment for a definite period of time (usually two years). They often almost imply that we need to do this so as not to lose access to services. Meanwhile, the truth is different. There are three options to choose from and each has its pros and cons.

Many agreements were signed when inflation was at most a few, not a dozen or so percent. During this time, prices have increased significantly, which is why the operating costs of the operator have also increased. Many companies try to take advantage of this fact by proposing a new offer at a higher price. It is often less attractive than the previous one. An example of this is the case of our reader, who, after the telephone contract expired, was offered to sign a new one, only a few zlotys more expensive, but with twice the Internet package. Telekom may insist on signing a new fixed-term contract here, but we do not have to agree to its terms.

In this situation, we have three options. First of all, we can negotiate a new, interesting contract with the operator and sign it for a definite period. However, it is worth reading it carefully, because it will most often differ from the previous one (). The second option is to resign from the services of a given operator and find a new one. In the third case, we can do absolutely nothing. Telekom is obliged to inform us about the imminent end of the contract and explain what will happen to the contract after its expiry. In most cases, it will be automatically converted into a contract for an indefinite period, and this solution gives us a lot of flexibility. We can break it at almost any time (but with the settlement period), for over two years also via the Internet (e.g. by e-mail).

However, it must be borne in mind that in such a situation, we will most often not be able to continue to use the various privileges that we were entitled to until the end of the old fixed-term contract. These can be, for example, additional gigabytes, access to streaming platforms or various promotions that reduce the standard subscription price. This is the reason why the monthly payment to the operator may increase after the end of the standard contract period. If the former conditions do not suit us, we can then change the operator or take advantage of another offer from the current one. Currently, telecoms can no longer automatically extend contracts for a fixed period (in the absence of consent from the client).

It is also worth noting that terminating an old contract before its completion also gives you more opportunities to negotiate terms. Operators usually try to retain the customer by offering him the most attractive offer. Therefore, nothing stands in the way of resigning from the services of one company and then returning to it on new terms before the end of a given billing period.
