At least 16 people have died and 31 are missing from the flooding caused after the destruction of the dam Kakhovkain the South of Ukrainein early June, according to a new balance sheet from Kiev authorities released this Saturday.
“Sixteen people died: 14 in the Kherson region and two in the Mykolaiv region. Thirty-one people are still missing,” Ukraine’s interior ministry said.
Russia announced shortly before the balance had risen to 29 dead in the Ukrainian areas under their control.
The Kakhovka hydroelectric dam, located on the Dnieper River in an area under Russian control, was destroyed on June 6, which caused floods that destroyed vast agricultural areas and forced the evacuation of thousands of people from water-covered towns and villages.
Ukraine accuses Russia of laying mines and blowing up the dam. with the aim of blocking the way to Ukrainian forces launching a counter-offensive in that region. Russia, on the other hand, assures that the installation collapsed after the Ukrainian bombings.
The destruction of the dam raised concerns about the situation of the Ukrainian nuclear power plant in Zaporizhia, which cools its reactors with the water of the Dnieper.
The director-general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, visited the plant this week and admitted that the situation was “serious” but that it was stabilizing.
