Dozens of people staring into space, wandering in circles, hunched over on the sidewalk, or passing out on the floor are the spitting image of drug addiction in Philadelphia.an American city where the use of opioids and other strong drugs is on the rise.

In Kensingtonthe neighborhood now popularly known as the “zombie street”, these people are concentrated for the purpose of getting resources and getting high. Around it, syringes and casings show the main activity of this sector.

The reality of this Philadelphia street was captured by a TikTok user, who toured the place capturing the moments when people succumbed to their addiction. Many of them have already settled permanently in the district, supported by tents, chairs, blankets and cardboard.

There are several videos that this TikTok account collects showing different streets in the same area during the day and night. But it’s the same scenario, people left as zombies after injecting heroin and other kinds of hallucinogenic drugs.

Tranqdrug, also called zombie drug, originated xylazine. This substance has been approved in the United States for use as a pain reliever for horses since 1972, but not for human use.

Tranq and opioids reduce the capacity of the central nervous system, cause drowsiness, memory loss, slow heart rate and numbness of the body.

But it’s not just what you see, but also what you smell. These drugs cause infections in the skin wounds and cause them to rot, emitting a stench that can be heard for meters around.

The United States has already recognized the magnitude of the problem. “This is the first time in our country’s history that a substance has been identified as an emerging threat,” said Dr. Rahul Gupta, director of the White House office in charge of drug warfare, at a news conference.

The country will be able to allocate funds to fight these drugs and prevent more scenarios from happening in other cities in the United States.
