Will it not be so cheap on AliExpress? The EU is taking steps to clean up e-commerce

You buy on Aliexpress and immediately pay customs duty. This is the goal of the reform announced by the European Union. All platforms that send goods to the EU will have to introduce an automatic system. There will be no running around offices to pay duty, but prices may go up.

and other such portals may soon start adding customs duties to goods shipped to Europe, even if the value of the order does not exceed 150 euros. The European Commission is planning to tighten the tax system.

As the EC explains, the reform is a response to the current pressure under which the EU customs services operate, including the huge increase in the volume of trade, especially in e-commerce. The EU wants to establish a new customs authority that will analyze transaction data. This is good news for consumers. The new system will simplify documentation requirements, which will translate into shortening the time of transferring goods, for example from China to the EU. The new system is also good news for the EU, which charges customs duties on goods imported from outside the European Economic Area. It is the source of as much as 14 percent. EU budget. The only thing is that, as the EU authorities admit, the new system will not increase the community’s profits too much, because the proceeds will increase by only EUR 1 billion.

A revolution in online shopping. You will pay the duty immediately

The EU will also seal the system, because, according to Bezprawnik.pl, even 65 percent of of parcels that go to EU countries is undervalued. All because the duty covers shipments more than 150 euros. There is no denying that sealing can lead to price increases – Chinese sellers will not be able to afford to take the customs fee entirely on themselves. Prices will go up for one more reason. Platforms will be responsible for ensuring that duties and VAT are paid upon purchase. On the one hand, consumers will no longer be exposed to hidden fees or unexpected formalities when the package arrives. On the other hand, price increases will be inevitable.

The EU argues that the most trusted traders will be able to release their goods for free circulation in the EU without any active customs intervention.

There will be more changes. Early on, the EP adopted rules according to which users of online platforms such as AliExpress or Amazon will have the right to return or exchange purchased products if it turns out that they do not meet safety standards.
