The 4th Chamber of Private Law of the Court of Justice of Sao Paulo on Thursday confirmed a verdict against the former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro (2019-2022), accused of collective immaterial damage to journalists.

For example, the court upheld the first-instance decision made in June 2022 in favor of an action by the Union of Professional Journalists of the State of Sao Paulo (SJSP) against Bolsonaro.

During his administration, Bolsonaro has targeted the press for constant accusations of spreading false reports against him in order to harm him, he said ep. The former president verbally attacked the media and journalists, especially women, on several occasions.

“The victory is a big step for the entire category (collective of journalists), which has been repeatedly attacked during Jair Bolsonaro’s tenure,” the union said.

However, the House has reduced the fixed compensation initially as a penalty to the former president, from 100,000 reais ($20,000 at the current exchange rate) to 50,000 reais ($10,000).
