Creator of ChatGPT in Poland. He met with the Prime Minister and students. He compared AI to an atomic bomb

Altman himself came to Poland, where, as he informed, he met with Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki. Then he took part in a panel at the University of Warsaw, where he spoke about the need to regulate AI. In his opinion, we should create an international regulatory agency for artificial intelligence, because the threats arising from this technology are similar to those that appeared with the harnessing of atomic energy by man.

Sam Altman and Wojciech Zaremba, the founders of OpenAI, appeared together with Szymon Sidor, a scientist who is also employed there, at the University of Warsaw, at a meeting organized by the Ideas NCBR research center. As Sam Altman said, this is one of the many meetings they hold around the world to listen to people, their thoughts and concerns that ChatGPT raises and find out in which direction their algorithm could develop

Altman also announced that he met Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki before the panel. The conversation was about how to take advantage of the opportunities offered by artificial intelligence, how to regulate it and how Poland can become an important player in this field. A large part of the panel, especially questions from the public, also focused on regulating AI so that it serves humanity, rather than posing a threat and exacerbating existing social inequalities.

OpenAI started eight years ago with robots and Poles. There is a big change in the air today

Although OpenAI is an American start-up, Poles have had a large share in its development from the very beginning. Szymon Sidor revealed that when the company employed only 50 people (today it is almost 400 employees), 20 percent of them were our compatriots. Wojciech Zaremba admitted that he recruited the best people from among his friends to the company and it turned out that many of them were Poles. As he added, we have a good education system, which was picked up by Altman, saying that he did not know what was behind it, but he was impressed. Zaremba added that Poland should take advantage of this potential and implement AI, e.g. in hospitals, government activities, or create more start-ups based on this technology.

Open AI started eight years ago, but the beginnings were not easy. As he said, it was difficult for them to obtain funds for development, because everyone believed that Google had such an advantage in this matter that it was not even worth taking up the glove. They started with robots, because everyone thought it was the easier way: to design machines and only then create cognitive (cognitive) models. It turned out, however, that visions straight from science-fiction missed the reality and it is easier to create a language model than a robot.

Today, it changes reality in a fundamental way, we are witnessing the formation of a new paradigm. The founder of OpenAI said that he had the impression that people around the world – more than Silicon Valley – realize how important we are at this moment. All three panellists argued that AI can change every aspect of our lives and improve education, communication, the justice system and health care. They admitted that they understood, however, that there is a risk with every technology and also AI creates a number of different threats.

We create the tools, you decide how you will use them

Altman said.

Scompared artificial intelligence to nuclear energy and emphasized how important it is to manage this technology globally. He also expressed the hope that AI will not be used for evil purposes, as in the case of the atom, which gave us nuclear energy, but also led to the creation of the nuclear bomb. In his opinion, we should create an institution dealing with AI, similar to the International Atomic Energy Agency. Also Wojciech Zaremba appealed to regulate the issue of companies working on artificial intelligence, such as their own. He also emphasized how important it is to focus on open source (open, publicly available source codes).

It is for these reasons that the founders of OpenAI are talking about AI with leaders around the world. During meetings with politicians and citizens, Altman noticed a lot of optimism around the use of AI tools. Developing countries show more enthusiasm, while rich countries feel a certain anxiety in this matter – he said.

People are supposed to decide about AI, not companies

Altman himself admitted that artificial intelligence is unstoppable. That is why OpenAI decided to release ChatGPT, although it is still a developing product. The alternative, he said, was to lock ourselves in a laboratory and show the world in 10 years a powerful tool that we would not be ready for. OpenAI has been preparing for eight months for the launch of the application, because they decided that it was the best way to give people time to get to know, understand and adapt to AI. They believe that thanks to this, they can benefit from the experience of other people, and in this way they open themselves to issues that they would not have been able to invent themselves and to risks that they did not foresee.

OpenAI is still working on issues related to copyright and the use of data, so that you can refuse to use them or easily agree to contribute to the development of AI. Altman admitted that they are still looking for a way to do this and announced a lot of progress in this matter next year. He also stated that they will look for answers on how to involve more women in this work, who today make up 5-10 percent of the workforce. people working on AI. The issue of detecting things created by artificial intelligence was also raised. Altman assessed that AI tools must be programmed in such a way that their creativity is detectable. However, he added that “the whole world has to decide on this.”

Major changes await the labor market and education

The creators of the ChatGPT tool believe that the positive effects on the labor market will clearly outweigh the risks that may result from it. Work efficiency will increase – first five-fold, then ten-fold, and then 100-fold, explained the creator of ChataGPT. According to Altman, artificial intelligence – as long as it is cheap, and this is what the speakers of Tuesday’s meeting want to make it – has great power to equalize societies, because what today requires a lot of work, and thus also capital, can be done much cheaper with the help of AI tools. This, in turn, will lead to a shift towards increasing the value of work, at the expense of capital, which is dominant today, they argued.

Altman also emphasized that people are supposed to do the work, and artificial intelligence only outsourced tasks. He further stated that he was very excited about the possibility of research being conducted by AI itself. Earlier, however, Szymon Sidor said that although he already uses ChatGPT for scientific purposes, it will not make it suddenly possible for one person to do all the research and all scientific work, because it simply requires going through too many stages. Especially that such models require a lot of computing power, which entails the need to use a huge amount of energy. “That’s another reason why they should watch over AI,” Altman said.

ChatGPT in the service of humanity. What principles do OpenAI follow?

When asked about the strategy of cooperation with non-profit organizations, the creators of ChataGPT only replied that they wanted to make artificial intelligence a cheap tool. The question came from a representative of Tech to The Rescue, which organizes the programming marathon. During the event, teams of programmers together with NGOs will work on using generative artificial intelligence like ChatGPT to help people. Next.Gazeta.pl took the patronage over the event, which will take place between 14 and 15 June. More information can be found in the following article:

The audience also asked what ethical principles are followed and whether there are any internal regulations in the company? However, there was no specific answer. We only learned from Szymon Sidor that everyone in the company is guided by the principle according to which they would like to create a general artificial intelligence. That is, one that can reason at least on a human level and that will benefit all humanity.

We want to improve the quality of life every decade. We believe technology is the best way to do this, but it requires a holistic social approach. We want to let the world know that this is happening (AI development – ed.) and collect feedback from people. We believe that if we can initiate the AI revolution, we can steer it – to some extent, because the whole world will be doing it – and make sure we solve security issues. This will be our contribution to the construction of the world

– concluded the panel Sam Altman.
