The number of deaths from floods in Italy rises to thirteen

At least 20 rivers have left their beds in the plains of Emilia-Romagna following the heavy rainfall recorded in recent days.

In northeastern Italy, the floods have devastated towns and affected thousands of farms. The rain also caused landslides.

Thirteen people were reported dead, according to all media, a new balance that the authorities have not yet confirmed.

More than 10,000 people had to leave their homes.

With “six months of rain in 36 hours” and “record rainfall” for two weeks, “no territory can withstand it,” complained Stefano Bonaccini, president of the Emilia-Romagna region.

The water covered vast agricultural areas, destroyed crops, entire cities suffered from the muddy flood, some bridges collapsed and 400 roads sank.

The damage could cost billions of euros, with another 2,000 million (about $2,150 million) from the floods at the beginning of the month.

The rain stopped by mid-afternoon on Wednesday and forecasters don’t expect significant precipitation on Thursday.

Ravenna mayor Michele De Pascale indicated on Thursday that while residents of certain evacuated towns could return to their homes, others would have to leave due to the threat of breaching some dikes.

In places where the waters receded, residents cleared houses and streets covered in mud and debris.

Due to the floods, the Formula 1 Grand Prix that was scheduled for Sunday in Emilia-Romagna has been cancelled.
