And in an effort to address one of the Internet’s current problems, Google has released a new feature to combat deepfakes.

Called About This Image, this feature promises to be an important step in understanding fake images designed to mislead people or spread misinformation.

What is this feature called About this image about?

According to Google’s blog post, the feature shows three things about images found in Search.

First, it provides information about when the image was first indexed by Google. It will also show where it first appeared online. Finally, it will reveal if it shows up on places like social media, news sites or even verification sites.

Google’s explanation, supported by the example above, reads as follows: “Having this background information about an image can help you understand whether an image is trustworthy or whether you should look twice at it.”

The About This Image feature will be available in the United States for the first time this summer. We can expect it to reach other regions before the end of the year.
