The municipality of Pedro Aguirre Cerda, in Santiago de Chilesuspended classes in schools and daycare centers this Monday due to the funeral of a known criminal, who died in early April.

“For the safety emergency in the immediate vicinity (of a school, a school for adults and two kindergartens) we inform that tomorrow (Monday) classes in educational centers will be suspended,” a statement from the municipal administration said yesterday.

“As a municipality, we remain alert to unforeseen circumstances and work tirelessly so that the education of our girls and boys is not affected by events outside their educational processes,” he added.

The danger that the municipality signaled is common in funeral ceremonies, popularly known as “drug funerals” -regardless of whether the deceased was a drug dealer or some other type of criminal-, attendees launch fireworks and firearm volleys into the air in honor of the deceased.

The arrival of the body of Moisés Gallardo, nicknamed “El Mota”, who died at the age of 32 when he fell from a building in Italy, alarmed authorities. Gallardo was an internationally recognized ‘lance’ (thief), according to local media. In Chile, he had been arrested 23 times for crimes such as surprise robbery, robbery with violence, reception and robbery.

“We are going through a situation that is a real nightmare,” complained the mayor of Pedro Aguirre Cerda, Luis Astudillo, interviewed by CNN Chile news channel.
