A year after the death of the African American George Floyd a team of experts on racism was created in 2020 at the hands of an American police officer United Nationswith the aim of investigating allegations of racially motivated police brutality around the world.

This committee travels to USA next week to “make recommendations on the concrete measures needed to ensure access to justice, accountability and the sanction to be applied for the disproportionate use of force and other human rights violations committed by those responsible for the maintaining order against Africans and people of African descent in the United States.”

The team, consisting of three independent researchers, will visit Washington, Atlanta, Los Angeles, Chicago, Minneapolis and New York for two weeks. In the cities they will visit, they will speak with federal, state and local government officials, with police authorities, civil society organizations and with people and communities affected by racism.

The experts from the committee called “Expert Mechanism for Promoting Racial Justice and Equality in the Administration of the Law”will they also visit detention centers during this trip, which will take place from April 24 to May 5according to a statement from the entity.

“We hope to obtain first-hand information about the experiences of people of African descent in the United States,” said Juan Méndez, one of the members of the Expert Mechanism.
