A member of the US National Guard accused of disclosing classified Pentagon documents briefly appeared before a judge on Wednesday his detention hearing was postponed for two weeks.

Jack Teixeira, 21, appeared in federal court in Boston to waive his right to a preliminary hearing. “Yes, your honor,” replied Teixeira, dressed in his orange prison jumpsuitwhen the judge asked him if he was your decision to waive the hearing.

A separate appearance was postponed after his lawyer said “More time is needed to address the issues raised by the government’s detention request.” The new date was not fixedalthough the defense asked for a two-week extension.

Teixeira, a telecommunications specialist in the Air National Guardis accused of organizing the largest leak of classified US intelligence documents in a decade. The documents showed US concerns about Ukraine’s ability to Russian invasionand showed that Washington has been spying on its allies Israel and South Korea.

Teixeira was arrested last week and charged with “unauthorized withholding and disclosure of national defense information” and with “unauthorized removal and withholding of classified documents or materials.” The charges expose him to sentences of 10 and 5 years, respectively. He has not yet revealed whether he is guilty.

Teixeira is accused of publishing the documents in a private chat group on the social networking platform Discord. Several appeared on other sites such as Twitter, 4Chan and Telegram. Teixeira had been authorized to access highly classified documents since 2021.
