Fetisov explained the lack of sanctions against Russian hockey players in the NHL with financial benefits
Two-time Olympic hockey champion, State Duma deputy Vyacheslav Fetisov explained the lack of sanctions against the Russians in the National Hockey League (NHL). His words are quoted by the publication “Arguments and Facts”.
Fetisov said that the performance of Russian players in the NHL is financially profitable. “The NHL wanted to sneeze at any political decisions. If Russian hockey players bring money, no one will refuse their services, ”he said.
Earlier, Olympic champion, two-time Stanley Cup winner Dominik Hasek called on the leaders of the league to resign because of the position on Russia. He considered that commissioner Gary Bettman and his deputy Bill Daley showed disrespect to the Czech Foreign Ministry by allowing Russian players to play in Prague for NHL pre-season games.
At the end of February 2022, most sports organizations suspended the national teams of Russia and Belarus on the recommendation of the International Olympic Committee. In some disciplines, such as tennis, boxing, MMA and chess, Russians play in a neutral status. Also, the Russians continue to play in the NHL clubs.
