The city of Fort Lauderdale and nearby areas endured heavy rain this Wednesday nightforcing the closure of the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood airport.
Authorities warned residents to pull off the road and seek higher ground.
The National Weather Service office in Miami has said soe the state of emergency from the flash flood would last until at least 11 p.m. for areas near Hollywood, Dania Beach, and Fort Lauderdale. “This is a life-threatening situation,” he said on Twitter.
The Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood airport remained closed to traffic and flights Wednesday night. For example, Jetblue’s operations from this Florida city to Guayaquil and Quito were canceled; Spirit also canceled its scheduled flight to Guayaquil for tonight due to the emergency.
It was indicated from the airport tonight that “our on and off ramps are still flooded and jammed with vehicular traffic. Again, don’t try to get in or out. #FLL until the weather gets better”.
“Rijkswaterstaat staff clean sewers and operate pumps to drain the water as quickly as possible.the city said in a press release. Neighboring Oakland Park city officials also requested that drivers stay off the road until the water level recedes.
Fort Lauderdale is experiencing flooding and heavy rainfall. City officials are trying to solve the problems and ensure the safety of residents.
