The United States said on Monday it was “determined” to do so Russia unfairly detains Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovichand demanded his immediate release by mounting pressure in favor of the journalist accused of espionage.
The State Department’s response has been unusually swift and shows how seriously Washington is taking the case of the journalist detained on March 29. It is the first time since Soviet times that Moscow has accused an American journalist of espionage.
The Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, “established that Evan Gershkovich was wrongly detained by Russia”said State Department spokesman Vedant Patel.
“We call on the Russian Federation to immediately release Gershkovich”he added in a statement. “Journalism is not a crime. We condemn the Kremlin’s continued crackdown on independent voices in Russia and its ongoing war on truth.”
