The Lemon8 social platform was created two years ago (it was made available in March 2020), but until now it was completely unknown in Europe and the US. The app was only available in a few Asian markets, and ByteDance (which is also the owner of TikTok) did nothing to change it for a long time. The sudden jump in her popularity coincided with a wave of criticism that fell on TikTok in the West. So it’s hard to talk about a coincidence here.
Lemon8 B breaks popularity records
Lemon8 (pronounced “lemonade”) is a social networking site that is supposed to compete with Instagram. Influencers who had the opportunity to use it as a combination of Pinterest and Instagram with a touch of TikTok. The platform allows you to publish funny videos and photos with short headbands and hashtags. It is surprising, however, that just a few weeks ago, most Internet users had no idea about the existence of the social network. The app was made available in the US just a month ago, and today it is breaking popularity records there. On Monday, Lemon8 became the ninth most popular app in the AppStore, and now also ranks second in the “Lifestyle” category. In the Google Play store, the app has already been downloaded over 5 million times. An enviable success. In particular, as noted by it has never even entered the top 200 list of popular apps before. Of course, behind the success was a large-scale advertising campaign of the owner of TikTok, including paying influencers.
Lemon8 is a backup plan in case of TikTok blockade?
The sudden opening of Lemon8 to Western markets (so far only to the USA and Great Britain, but the next release of the platform in other countries is probably a matter of time) suggests that the “new” social network ByteDance is a backup plan in the event of TikTok being blocked. For the time being, he has to deal with huge problems in many countries due to suspicions of cooperation with the authorities in Beijing. The platform was completely blocked in India some time ago. The USA, Canada, Great Britain and the European Union, in turn, introduced restrictions on the use of TikTok, e.g. a ban on installing the platform on the phones of government officials and officials.
