On March 27, 2020, the Pope Francisco expressed hope as the world moved through the coronavirus pandemic COVID-19. This year his words travel into space in a miniature digital book.

The Vatican project, called “Play Satellites” (“Satellite of Hope”, in Latin), aims to send the Pope’s words into space by placing a “nanobook” in orbit at an altitude of about 525 km.

The electronic piece was designed by students from the Polytechnic School of Turin, Italy.

The idea is to send this important speech “across national borders so that through space it reaches the greatest possible number of women and men who are in trouble on our planet”, explained the president of the Italian space agency, Giorgio Saccoccia.

The book, barely two millimeters in size, will be shipped on a rectangular satellite of about thirty centimeters, which will be placed in orbit by a Falcon 9 rocket from the SpaceX company. The rocket will then take off June 10th from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California, United States.

“That prayer has become an icon of hope that continues its journey and continues to call the inhabitants of the planet to action,” the project’s promoters said at the press conference. The book containing the message is titled: “Why are you afraid? Don’t you have faith yet? and was issued by the Vatican.
