Recently, Mexico has allowed the passage of foreign migrants who have an appointment confirmed by the Customs and Border Protection Office (CBP), according to the National Institute of Migration (INM) under the Mexican Ministry of the Interior.

However, the INM clarified that allowing passage “does not imply that permits are issued to remain in Mexico. It allows the use of Mexican territory for the transit of foreigners “originating in Venezuela, Haiti, Cuba and Nicaragua” who have an application to enter the United States previously accepted by CBP.

This is possible thanks to the fact that the Immigration Department maintains communication with CBP links, to verify the existence of an appointment on US territory and to allow passage to reach the United States authorized port of entry, both by air and land.

What is a CBP appointment?

Migrants seeking asylum on the southern border of the United States now have the United States Customs and Border Protection (CBP) application available to schedule an appointment to seek asylum in the US, only if they meet humanitarian requirements exception to Title 42.

Title 42 is a public health policy being implemented during the Covid-19 pandemic that allows immigration agents to quickly return to Mexico some migrants seeking asylum in the United States.

Qualified beneficiaries who are outside the United States and do not have entry documents may be considered for prior authorization to travel on a case-by-case basis.

For a period of temporary stays of up to two years for urgent humanitarian reasons or significant public benefit, according to USCIS.

The idea is that applicants enter their biographical information through the app instead of going directly to an entry gate.

The applicant must declare that “he/she, his/her partner or an accompanying child meets the specific vulnerability criteria” and thus schedule an appointment to appear for inspection at a participating port of entry.

If you are a refugee or asylum seeker in the United States, you can use that same visa to “ask” some relatives

The participating ports of entry are:

CBP One is free to download and available in the Apple and Google app stores.

How to use CBP?

1. Registration: If you are not yet registered, you must create a user with an email address and a password.

2. Who are you?: Then the application sends you to the so-called personal identification module “Who are you?”, where you must identify yourself as a traveler (in case you are seeking asylum in the US) and then give the “Country” option in case of travelers planning to cross the border by land cross country.

3. Advance information: Then you have to choose the option “Send information in advance” and choose your preferred language.

4. Traveler Information: The next step is to fill in the details of all travelers from the same family traveling together. Select the “Add Person” option.

There you have to answer data such as names, surnames, date and place of birth, nationality, country of residence and contact details.

In addition, you must take a photo of each of the people requesting the appointment by family group.

5. Destination: In the next module, you must provide a residence or destination address in the United States, as well as an emergency contact there. Then you must provide information about previous residence in another country.

6. Request an appointment: Next, you need to choose the date, time and gateway for your CBP appointment.

7. Confirmation: When you make an appointment, you get a confirmation screen where confirmation numbers are displayed for each person in the family, as well as the appointment information.

The appointment details will also arrive at the email you specified earlier.

What happens when I arrive at the CBP appointment?

When the traveler arrives for their appointment at the ports of entry, a photo is taken to confirm the information provided in advance in the CBP app.

You should note that this does not guarantee an exemption from the current Title 42, nor does it guarantee asylum in the United States.

“Individuals who have no legal basis to remain in the United States will be immediately removed or deported.”
