Samsung confirms it’s using neural networks to enhance photos

The South Korean company Samsung has responded to accusations of cheating owners of Galaxy S23 Ultra smartphones. This is reported by The Verge.

Representatives of the corporation published material on its website in which they reacted to the recent scandal involving the brand’s new smartphones. Earlier, Reddit users stated that the camera of the flagship Galaxy S23 Ultra cannot actually take high-quality photos of the moon, instead generating its image using neural networks.

The report says that when the smartphone is zoomed in significantly, the “Scene Optimization” function is automatically activated, the identification of the moon and other space objects is achieved through the “AI deep learning model”. In fact, the company confirmed that they will use artificial intelligence, which improves the quality of photos. Samsung also noted that the camera uses neural networks to create a more detailed image.

The Verge experts noted that, despite the detailed answer, the company did not think about what they could mislead users by advertising a high-quality smartphone camera. However, the journalists emphasized that many devices on the market have long used AI as part of computational photography.

At the end of February, users of the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra talked about the appearance of artifacts resembling glass peeling off the matrix on the flagship screens. The company replied that this feature cannot be considered a hardware defect.
