ten million children Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger are in urgent need of humanitarian aidtwice as many as in 2020 due to the intensification of conflicts, UNICEF warned on Friday.
Burkina Faso, the scene of two military coups in 2022, has been caught in a spiral of Jihadist violence that started in Mali and Niger a few years earlier and spread beyond the borders.
Nearly four million boys and girls are threatened in these countriesaccording to a report by the United Nations Children’s Fund (Unicef).
“Armed conflicts increasingly affect childrenvictims of the intensification of military confrontations or non-state armed groups,” Marie Pierre Poirier, UNICEF Regional Director for West and Central Africa, said in a statement.
“The year 2022 was particularly violent for the children of the central Sahel. All parties to the conflict must urgently end the attacks against them, but also against their schools, health centers and homes,” it continues.
According to the institution armed groups opposed to the state education system burn and loot schools, but they also threaten, kidnap or execute teachers.
