Young Ecuadorian Samantha Maldonado’s desires were cut short at dawn on Saturday, March 11 by her ex-partner.
The 26-year-old had arrived in Chicago, United States, less than a year ago, hoping for a brighter future. After finishing his shift at a restaurant, Maldonado met up with some friends, but in the middle of the evening he met his assailant, identified as 31-year-old Alejandro Arellano.
Maldonado dated Arellano for five months, but they had split a week ago and both worked at the same place.
After leaving a bar, the young woman was supposed to take the train, but she was chased by Arellano. Surveillance video captured the event, as the woman attempted to board the train on the platform, but was stopped.
When he tried to get him away, the man pushed her and pulled out a metal object, what was supposed to be a knife, and stabbed her in the chest, abdomen and arm.

“When the defendant approached the victim from behind, he grabbed her neck and shoulder and stabbed her multiple times,” Cook County State Attorney Anne McCord said in statements collected by ABC7 Chicago.
Arellano had extended the knife as he ascended the stairs, but then put it away. Although Maldonado tried to hide behind a tool on the platform, he was unable to flee. After the attack, the young woman Arellano was able to flee, but she stumbled off the platform as he boarded the train to go home.
In the street, Maldonado stumbled again and, with his dying breath, pronounced the name of his attacker. “She named Arellano as the culprit before he succumbed to his injuries,” said Eric Carter, first deputy superintendent of police.

The 31-year-old man was arrested outside his home while still wearing the clothing from the incident, as well as the gun he used to stab Maldonado.
The young woman’s father traveled to the United States to identify her. Funds for funeral expenses were raised through the Go Fund Me platform.
Arellano remains in custody without bail and will appear in court again at the end of March.
