An elementary school in Alabama opened two bulletproof chambers for it protect students from mass shootings. Elementary school West in Cullman installed the $60,000 bulletproof chambers in two classrooms, the first in the US.

The ballistic wall is designed to work like a white board when it’s not showing, lie flat against the walls. However, during mass shootings or severe weather, the shield can be removed from the wall in 10 seconds. It is equipped with a door without a handle, to protect students from a gunman who enters the small security room from the outside, and it can be locked from the inside.

The original product was designed as ballistic shelters for the military, But after the shooting in Uvalde, Texas, in which 19 children and two teachers were shot dead by Salvador Ramos, KT Security Solutions changed its focus to protect students and teachers.

The team can stop a rifle bullet and reach protection level 3. There is only one level above, 4, which can stop a piercing rifle’s steel core armor.

The product comes as more and more mass shooters choose to use guns in their attacksalthough handguns are still the most commonly used. Of the 112 mass shootings in 2023, 48 children have died, according to police Gun Violence Archives.

Alabama has had 42 school shootings since 1970, according to World Population Review. And the state has reported the largest increase in threats, fighting, guns and drugs since the 2021-2022 school year, according to the Alabama Education Laboratory.

The Alabama school plans to install more bulletproof shelters in its most vulnerable classrooms and is currently seeking funding. State and education leaders are also seeking state funding for classrooms.
