Laptop Mag: Apple will violate EU laws if it limits iPhone charging speed

Apple’s decision to certify USB-C cables may be contrary to EU law. This is reported by Laptop Mag.

Media journalists commented on rumors that Apple may certify USB-C cables for iPhone and limit the capabilities of third-party accessories. Thus, the original chargers will work at maximum power, and the capabilities of third-party USB-C accessories may be limited. The authors of the publication considered that in this way the company could violate the laws of the European Union.

Experts studied the EU documents on a single charging standard and found out that the law prohibits gadget manufacturers from manipulating chargers – for example, limiting the charging speed. Thus, the restriction of third-party chargers by Apple can be perceived as a violation of EU law.

“Apple will decide that all cables not certified by the Made for iPhone program will only charge the iPhone 15 Pro at 15 watts, and cables accredited by MFi will work up to 27 watts,” the authors cited an example. Journalists recalled that Apple is doing a similar thing with Lightning chargers, which must be certified by the company to fully work with the iPhone.

At the end of October, Apple confirmed that it would equip future smartphones with a USB-C connector. Thus, the corporation responded to the EU law, according to which by the end of 2024 all gadgets sold in the EU must be equipped with a USB-C port.
