A Russian Su-27 fighter jet collided with an unmanned MQ-9 Reaper aircraft over the Black Sea on Tuesday, resulting in the drone hitting the water, the US military command in Europe (USEUCOM) reported.

“Our MQ-9 aircraft was conducting routine operations in international airspace when it was intercepted and hit by a Russian aircraft. resulting in an accident and the total loss of the MQ-9,” Gen. James Hecker, commander of the United States Air Force Europe, said in a statement.

According to the statement the US Air Force intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance drone was intercepted by two Russian fighters, one of which caused the accident.

According to USEUCOM, one of the Russian aircraft “dumped fuel” on several occasions and flew in front of the drone “in an irresponsible, environmentally damaging and unprofessional manner”.

In the note, General Hecker assured that the aircraft of the United States and its allies “will continue to operate in international airspace, and we call on the Russians to conduct themselves safely and professionally.”
