“I gave her a present and she kicked it”: The traumatic experience of a woman who was fired by her boss after donating a kidney

“Of a good birth is to be grateful” remembers a saying and it is one of the things least in mind, let alone in practice, a woman who is still criticized for firing the employee who donated a kidney to save her life from work.

Debbie Stevens, 47, didn’t think twice when she presented her boss Jackie Brucia, 61, with such a vital organ.

The sixty-year-old had seen her health deteriorate due to the advance of a disease, for which she needed a transplant. RCN Radio emphasized that Brucia had cancer.

After the tests, the doctors warned that the donated organ was not compatible. However, Brucia received a kidney from another donor.

The doctors, in turn, transplanted Debbie’s supporting kidney into another patient. He has always achieved his goal: to give life.

In the time leading up to the postoperative period, Brucia recovered much faster. Debbie, on the other hand, had a few setbacks that kept her away from her job.

According to Clarín, the boss started contacting her employee and “accused her mistakes.”

“What are you doing? Why aren’t you working? You can’t come and go as you please,” the woman said to Debbie.

When she was able to return to work, “the boss started blaming her for work errors at the dealership where they work.”

According to Debbie, he then sent her “to another location, 30 miles from her home.” That was interpreted as a “punishment”. Overwhelmed, she sought help from a psychologist and he sent a letter. In response, Debbie was fired.

He saved a man’s life with his kidney

Set in New York, the story dates back to 2011. It recently went viral and though time passes, Debbie’s big lesson remains

“I decided to be a kidney donor for my boss, and she took my heart,” she lamented, according to a press quote.

“I feel betrayed (…). She took my present, put it on the floor and kicked it away,” he described. The woman considered suing her former boss and demanding the kidney back.

In Excelsior they quote Brucia: “I will always be grateful to her for giving me a kidney…I have nothing bad to say about her.”

From this ordeal, Debbie has the satisfaction of helping: Her kidney was brought to Missouri, and Debbie sums up, “I saved a man’s life.”
