STALKER 2. Russian hackers are blackmailing the developers of the game. The Ukrainians answer: We will not be intimidated

The Ukrainian studio GSC Game World allegedly fell victim to Russian hackers who stole source files from the upcoming STALKER 2 game. Blackmailers are demanding that the Russian translation of the title be restored. The Ukrainians responded with a strong statement.

STALKER 2: Heart of Chornobyl is the latest installment of the popular series of post-apocalyptic FPS games from the Ukrainian studio GSC Game World. Initially, the title was supposed to be released in 2022. Unfortunately, after Russia’s bandit attack on Ukraine, the creators had to postpone its premiere.

The situation of the Ukrainian studio is not easy. After the outbreak of war, GSC Game World moved its headquarters from Ukraine to the Czech Republic, and some employees went to the front to defend their country against the Russians. However, the creators still believe that STALKER 2 will reach the players in 2023.

STALKER 2. Hackers demand the restoration of the Russian translation

However, the plans of the Ukrainians want to be thwarted by Russian hackers. On Monday, a group hiding under the name Vestnik TSS informed on social media about an attack on GSC Game World servers. The Russians were allegedly in possession of tens of gigabytes with the game’s source files.

The Russians demand GSC Game World restoring the Russian translation to STALKER 2. Otherwise, they will make the compromised files public. Let us remind you that the developers of the game decided to remove the Russian language from it as part of solidarity with those fighting on the front.

In addition, the subtitle of the production has changed. “Heart of Chernobyl” has been replaced by “Heart of Chornobyl“, which corresponds to the Ukrainian spelling of the name of the city where the action of the title takes place.

Russian blackmailers are also demanding the unban of one of their group members on the game’s official Discord, as well as an apology from the game’s developers for their social media posts in which they condemned Russian aggression against Ukraine.

GSC Game World responds: We will not be intimidated

This brazen (because it’s hard to use another word) blackmail met with a very strong response from GSC Game World. As expected, the developers of the game do not intend to meet the demands of Russian hackers.

Although the studio confirmed that there was indeed a hack to the servers, it was not the first attack of this kind. GSC Game World also appealed to players not to look at stolen game materials that may be published by the Russians.

We are a Ukrainian company and like many Ukrainians, we have experienced many things that are much worse than blackmail: destroyed homes, ruined lives and the death of our loved ones. Attempts to intimidate us are therefore doomed to failure

– reads GSC Game World’s statement published on Twitter.

STALKER 2: Heart of Chornobyl is a direct continuation of the post-apocalyptic FPS from 2007, which gained great popularity (also in Poland). The title will again take us to the dark Zone – a vast area around the Chernobyl nuclear power plant.
