Ten people died and another five were injured after an attack at a bar in the central state of Guanajuato, one of the most violent in Mexico, authorities reported Sunday.

The attack occurred after 11 p.m. local time on Saturday (5 a.m. GMT) at the “El Estadio” bar, when a group of gunmen entered and fired on customers and employees of the establishment, located on a highway connecting the cities of Celaya and Querétaro. . .

Eight people died at the scene of the attack, two women and six men, and seven others were injured who remained “until now unknown”, according to the official part of the prosecutor’s office.

Later, the municipal government of Apaseo el Grande confirmed the deaths of two of the injured, a 23-year-old woman and a 16-year-old boy, who died while being treated at a public hospital in Celaya.

The current death toll is seven men and three women, while the five injured reportedly have a “reserved prognosis” due to the severity of the injuries, official sources said.

Federal and local agency agents conducted an operation, while the scene was examined by experts from the Criminal Investigation Agency (AIC).

Guanajuato’s state government deplored the attack in a statement, assuring it is cooperating with the prosecutor’s office “to find those responsible” in addition to remaining “close to the families of those affected”.

A prosperous industrial state and home to some of Mexico’s most visited tourist destinations, Guanajuato has become the most violent entity in Mexico as a result of the dispute between the Santa Rosa de Lima groups and the Jalisco Nueva Generación Cartel.

Both organizations, which are involved in drug trafficking and fuel theft, among other things, contest the territories of the entity with blood and fire.
