The Nicaraguan Foreign Ministry has announced that the suspension of diplomatic relations with the Vatican City State has been considered following Pope Francis’ statements.

“In view of the information released by sources apparently associated with the Catholic Church, the Government of Reconciliation and National Unity of our Nicaragua, Blessed and Forever, releases that between the Vatican State and the Republic of Nicaragua there is a suspension of diplomatic relations “, a statement from the State Department said.

Daniel Ortega has an “imbalance,” says Pope Francis when he denounces Nicaragua as a “rude dictatorship”

The pope’s statements came days after the Central American country’s government decided to close two universities linked to the Catholic Church.

“With great respect, I have no choice but to think about an imbalance in the person who leads,” said Francisco, referring to Ortega, in power since 2007 and re-elected consecutively in disputed elections.

Francis also mentioned that Nicaragua imprisoned a bishop who did not accept exile.

“It’s something outside of what we experience, it’s like bringing the communist dictatorship of 1917 or the Hitler dictatorship of 1935, bringing the same thing here (…) They are kind of rude dictatorships,” added the Holy Father.
