Cyber expert Stepanov announced the possibility of finding a smartphone through a cell tower or Wi-Fi
Valery Stepanov, head of the Competence Center for Information Security of T1 Group, said that one cannot become “invisible” if the geolocation function on a smartphone is turned off. He spoke about this in an interview with the Prime agency.
The cyberexpert named a way to detect a smartphone without geolocation and explained that this can be done through a cell tower. Cellular operators can calculate the approximate location of the gadget when they measure the time it takes for the signal to travel from the device to the tower and back.

In addition, a phone with Wi-Fi activated automatically connects to nearby networks and notes the signal strength. When using public Wi-Fi, the provider asks for consent to geolocation, after which it fixes the location of the device in the coverage area of the point.
Also, the gadget will help detect IMSI-interceptors – devices that mimic cell towers. A device on which malware or spyware is installed can be found even when geolocation is turned off.
Earlier, Counterpoint Research agency listed the most popular smartphones of 2022. iPhone 13 became the best-selling smartphone with a 5 percent share.
