A delegation of deputies from Hungary that visited the Swedish Parliament and met with Speaker Andreas Norlen on Tuesday promised to support the country’s entry into NATO. It is reported by Interfax with reference to the Associated Press.

“We support Sweden’s NATO membership,” said Deputy Speaker of the Hungarian Parliament Csaba Hende.

He noted that his delegation made it clear to the Swedish parliamentarians that the Hungarian government, the president, the prime minister and most of the members of parliament are in favor of the country joining the alliance.

At the same time, Hende added that the Swedish side, however, should improve relations between Budapest and Stockholm.

Some parliamentarians and members of the Hungarian government, including Prime Minister Viktor Orban, have accused Sweden of spreading lies about Hungary. Hende stated that it would be appropriate if Stockholm did not “insinuate the absence of the rule of law in the country based on false facts”.

Earlier in March, the Hungarian National Assembly once again postponed the vote on the ratification of Sweden and Finland’s membership in NATO, now it will have to take place no earlier than March 20.

NATO member states signed the accession protocols for Finland and Sweden to the North Atlantic Council on 5 July 2022. These states will join NATO as soon as all NATO member states ratify the accession protocols.

To date, of the 30 NATO countries, only Turkey and Hungary have not yet ratified the membership of Sweden and Finland in the alliance.
