A group of scientists discovered one passage nine meters long and two meters wide hidden in the Great Pyramid of Cheops, The Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities announced this on Thursday.
The tunnel has a triangular roof and wax “discovered on the north face of the Great Pyramid of King Cheops”stated the Minister of Tourism, Ahmed Issa, in Giza, the plateau where the mausoleum, built more than 4500 years ago, is located. The discovery was made thanks to the ScanPyramids project, an international scientific mission that study the interior of the pyramids without excavations.
French, German, Canadian and Japanese universities are collaborating on the project, as is a group of Egyptian experts.
Since 2015, the mission has been analyzing the interior of the pyramid thanks to state-of-the-art technologies that make it possible to see through the structures. These tools succeed in detecting possible voids or unknown internal structures.
So says archaeologist Zahi Hawass, who heads the scientific committee that oversaw the projectis it “quite possible” that the tunnel is “protecting something”. “In my opinion, protects the real burial chamber of King Cheops”, said the one who was also the country’s former minister of antiquities.
Cheops Pyramid, the largest of the three pyramids of Giza, is the last of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World still standing. The monument, 139 meters high and 230 meters wide, stands on the Giza plateau next to the Sphinx and the pyramids of Khafre and Menkaure.
In 2017, ScanPyramida scientists had revealed the presence of a huge hole in the pyramidabout the size of a passenger jet.
