And yet, a Russian hacker attack. The government is changing the narrative regarding problems with the Tax.gov.pl website

On Tuesday, the Taxpay.gov.pl website was down. The government initially denied media reports that it was a hacker attack. A technical error was claimed. However, the authorities changed the narrative. The Secretary of State for Digitization at the Chancellery of the Prime Minister, Janusz Cieszyñski, admitted that the problems were caused by the attack on the servers.

It turns out that Tuesday’s problems with the Taxpay.gov.pl portal were caused by a hacker attack, and not technical problems, as originally claimed by the Ministry of Finance. This was admitted on Wednesday by Janusz Cieszyński

As the secretary for digitization explained, it was a DDoS attack in which artificial traffic is generated on the website, so the servers are overloaded and cannot accept more people.

This is an attack that blocks access to the site, not blocks security and makes our data at risk

– Cieszyński reassured people who were worried about the leak. The politician added that the Russians were responsible for the attack, which is most likely indicated by the information at his disposal.

It just showed “This site is unreachable”.

“For several days, Russian telegrams have been showing persuasions for a DDoS attack on Polish servers, including . As a result, we will not submit an ePIT now,” Krzysztof Berenda, a journalist at RMF FM, informed on Tuesday.

On Tuesday, around 9:30 am, however, he denied media reports and informed that “the outage in the operation of the biznes.gov.pl portal resulted from a technical error and was not the result of a hacker attack.” Only Janusz Cieszyński corrected this information.

The number of hacker attacks has increased dramatically

Janusz Cieszyński also said in the program that the number of cyberattacks since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine has increased fivefold. However, the digital secretary did not answer the question of whether attacks from the territory can be stopped.

He stressed, however, that such attacks as the one on Michał Dworczyk’s e-mail account are the activities of Russian services.

The attack was attributed to Russian intelligence by 27 EU countries, in a unanimous statement. Not all information on this subject is provided to the public

– said Janusz Cieszyński.
