We have never seen the spectacular images who have managed to capture scientists from the CSIC of Vigo. For the first time they have recorded some octopuses during intercourse in captivity and everything that happens after.
Although this is one of those beautiful images with a sad ending. The story begins with sex, that is how the male fertilizes it and that is how Galician researchers have recorded it in the Ría de Vigo.
The female octopus, moments later, surrounded by her eggs. As Álvaro Roura, a marine biologist, explains, a pulp can put from 100,000 to half a million eggs.
They only have one litter, the pulp makes a cave and there the larvae hang from the ceiling for months and take care of the clusters of eggs by cleaning them with the suction cups.
such is the effort that as soon as they are born, agonizes and dies. The newborn octopuses go 200 kilometers out to sea and return to the coast when they are already young. The females will be fertilized and then die.
Four years ago, the CSIC of Vigo managed to record octopuses in captivity for the first time. They continue to study them to achieve a massive reproduction that helps not to deplete the sea, as explained by research professor Ángel González. The objective is to transfer the knowledge they obtain from the images to captivity conditions to increase their survival and well-being.
