Roskachestvo: “smart” security cameras can be hacked via public Wi-Fi

Surveillance IP cameras transmitting data over the network can be hacked if the user is viewing the image via public Wi-Fi and using a password that is too simple. RIA Novosti was told about this in Roskachestvo.

Experts explained this by the fact that wireless IP cameras connect to the Web and make video broadcasting available from anywhere in the world.

To protect yourself from hacking, Roskachestvo advised to buy cameras only from trusted manufacturers and not to use public unsecured Wi-Fi networks when watching video from the camera. It is also recommended that you create more complex passwords and update them regularly. It is also important to keep track of updates and install them in a timely manner.

Roskachestvo recognized that it is impossible not to buy such devices in the modern world. “A more practical recommendation would be to turn off the automatic content recognition function, such an option is available, for example, for Smart TV,” the experts suggested. Speaker owners were advised not to place them near sound sources so that they “do not listen to too much.”

Previously, experts from Carnegie Mellon University (USA) described an affordable way to monitor people through a physical obstacle using Wi-Fi. To do this, you can use a regular Wi-Fi router and a specially trained DensePose neural network. The computer algorithm is able to match the Wi-Fi signal with the coordinates and create a 3D model of a person behind the wall.
