Biden administration proposes lifting restrictions on installing apps on smartphones

Representatives of the US administration of Joe Biden demanded that Apple and Google change the rules for installing applications on smartphones. This is reported by the publication ArsTechnica.

The report was prepared by the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) of the Department of Commerce – the document was compiled by executive order of the US presidential administration. NTIA experts concluded that users are limited in their ability to install applications on their devices.

In this regard, the organization’s experts criticized Apple and Google, which, according to them, act as “application gatekeepers” and reduce innovation. The material says that IT companies create obstacles for developers and impose restrictions by requiring content creators to go through slow and non-transparent verification processes.

“App developers and alternative mobile app stores are not in a position to compete on a fair playing field, whether with each other or with the products and services offered by the gatekeepers,” NTIA said.

“We respectfully disagree with a number of the report’s findings that ignore the investments we’re making in innovation, privacy and security,” Apple said in a statement. “We disagree with how this report characterizes the Android OS as providing more choice and competition,” Google said in a statement.

Earlier Bloomberg sources reported that Apple is considering the possibility of allowing third-party stores to download applications on the iPhone and iPad. It is specified that in this way the American company will respond to new EU laws aimed at creating equal conditions for software developers for smartphones.
