The US, Japan and the Netherlands are planning a move against China. Beijing may have a big problem

According to unofficial reports, the United States managed to persuade Japan and the Netherlands to take joint action to limit China’s access to semiconductors. According to informants familiar with the matter, both countries are ready to cooperate with the US, and talks on this subject in Washington are expected to end on Friday.

The US, Japan and the Netherlands will look at China. Will they restrict exports?

According to the report, the restrictions are to affect the sharing of technology and the sale of specialized equipment for the production of semiconductors. The Dutch are to restrict ASML Holding NV from selling machines used to produce certain types of chips in China, and the Japanese will impose similar restrictions on Nikon and possibly also Tokyo Electron.

Japanese Deputy Prime Minister Seiji Kihara said Japan would take appropriate action based on “regulatory actions” by the US and other countries. Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte “expects to reach an agreement” with the US on the issue, but the Netherlands will not adopt the US rules outright. More details will be revealed after the talks are concluded.

Reuters: Such an agreement will be a great success for the Biden administration

It follows that the agreement between American, Dutch and Japanese officials should be signed by the end of January. According to the agency, if all three sides finally reach an agreement, it will be a great diplomatic success for the Joe Biden administration.

The Americans began controlling the flow of equipment and technologies needed to produce semiconductors to China in October 2022 to slow down the technological and military development of the Middle Kingdom. Without control by other countries, American companies found themselves at a disadvantage compared to companies in, among others, from Japan and the Netherlands – writes the Reuters Agency.

Beijing, with insufficient technology, off-the-shelf solutions and chip production equipment, may be at a disadvantage. Currently, semiconductors are used almost everywhere – from electronics and household appliances to cars.
