News.com: Boxing trainer accidentally calls armed police via Apple Watch
A boxing coach from Sydney accidentally called the armed police using the emergency function of the Apple Watch. This is reported by the Australian portal News.com.
As it became known to the publication, 34-year-old Muay Thai trainer Jamie Alleyn called the police to the gym when he was training his clients. As it turned out, Alleyne accidentally used the emergency function of the Apple Watch smartwatch, which recorded screams and sounds during training and transmitted the recording to the local police. According to the coach, he was shocked when at about 7:45 am local time, 15 armed police officers showed up at his gym.
Later, the man found out that the “1-1-2” commands he uttered were perceived by the clock as a signal to dial the short number 112, which is assigned to emergency services in Australia. The clock transmitted the sound from the microphone to the dispatcher at the moment when Alleyn shouted “good shot”, referring to the athlete’s successful shot.
Later, the coach explained that he had put on his watch for the duration of the workout and, apparently, accidentally held down the call button. “I commend the local police for their prompt response – but fortunately it was not something serious,” Jamie Alleyn told reporters.
In December, US and Canadian emergency officials reported a high number of false calls from Apple devices. False alarms of the new emergency call feature have become more frequent in tourist areas, such as ski resorts.
