Roskachestvo: cheap smart watches are dangerous for collecting a lot of data
Roskachestvo called the main danger of affordable smart watches the setting to collect an excessive amount of data about users. This was reported on the website of the organization.
The company’s specialists analyzed the report of the British organization “Which?”, which tested cheap smart watches. Experts have found that inexpensive devices are often able to collect too much data about the user. Russian experts confirmed the study by checking 12 popular models available in retail and on AliExpress.
It turned out that eight of the smartwatches on their list track the exact coordinates of the owner, and not the general location. It is believed that such information is needed to make a weather forecast, but devices request location data all the time. It turned out that IWO Pro Series 7, popular among Russians, requested geolocation data 250 times in 5 minutes.
During the tests, the Aswee PUO1, Colmi P6 and Lige New Smartwatch models required permission to permanently determine the location. The experts found that the IWO 14 watch application did not store all the data on the device, but on the infrastructure owned by the seller. As part of testing, it was also found that Colmi P6 and Smart Fitness Watch Sport Activity Tracker do not accurately show the user’s heart rate data.
