Data of 200 million Twitter users leaked. Hackers sell them online for… $2

The data comes from a number of different leaks that occurred in 2021. Hackers then took advantage of a security vulnerability in Twitter to steal basic data associated with accounts – including usernames, nicknames, email addresses or number of followers.

Initially, it was not known exactly how much data was stolen and what the criminals’ plans were. Now, however, cybersecurity specialists have spotted them on hacker forums in the so-called the underground of the internet. It was also possible to verify that at least some of these data are true.

According to the industry, one of the users offered to sell a data package weighing almost 60 GB containing as much as 221.6 million records from about 200 million Twitter accounts. The hacker sells such a huge database for a symbolic amount of $ 2.

It is possible that at least part of the database has already been sold on hacker forums. Cited cybersecurity researcher Alon Gal stated that this is “one of the most significant leaks I’ve seen.”

It is not known whether Twitter has taken any action on this matter. The company did not comment on the reports and did not answer questions from the media (including Reuters).

How can I check if I have been attacked?

You can do this through a website that also shows if a given email address or phone number has been leaked during some other hacking attack. The service reported on Thursday that it had updated its database by 98 percent. email addresses that were stolen from Twitter.

Fortunately, the criminals did not manage to take over the passwords to Twitter accounts. This does not mean that website users are completely safe. Criminals can use the purchased data to perform targeted phishing attacks, i.e. to extort the data they need from less attentive Internet users, e.g. by impersonating Twitter itself.
