Elon Musk started his rule in Twitter with huge cuts. So far, the new head of the platform has already laid off 75 percent. with approx. 7.5 thousand employees. He also experimented with various ways that would be a way to save money in the company, such as fees for the blue tag of a verified account.
Twitter usernames going under the hammer?
However, Elon Musk and Twitter have one more idea up their sleeve. How, based on information from people with knowledge of the matter, Twitter is considering the possibility of buying usernames.
Specifically, it’s about unique nicknames that are assigned to each Twitter account (for example – Elon Musk’s nickname is @elonmusk). They cannot be repeated, therefore, once assigned to a specific (still existing) account, they will not be used by another person.
Meanwhile, the more unique ones can have a real, often high value. The “NYT” explains that already some people or companies are able to spend thousands of dollars to acquire a name that they particularly care about.
Fortunately, Twitter does not intend to deprive anyone of previously registered usernames. It is about those no longer used, assigned, for example, to deleted or blocked accounts. A month ago, Elon Musk signaled that he could release about 1.5 billion such names that, for example, have not been used for over a year.
Talks about selling the released nicknames to users have reportedly been going on in Twitter since December. Unfortunately, it is not clear at what stage they are currently and whether the possibility of purchasing them will actually be introduced in the future. It is certain, however, that Twitter is looking for savings and will probably not hesitate to use an idea that can bring additional revenue to the platform.
