“Kommersant”: the share of laptops supplied to Russia with Windows decreased to 30 percent
In Russia, deliveries of laptops with a preinstalled Windows operating system have fallen. It is reported by “Kommersant”.
According to Kommersant’s sources, by November 2022, the share of Windows laptops supplied to the Russian market has decreased. For 11 months of the year, the share of such PCs was reduced to less than one third. Previously, almost all imported laptops had pre-installed Windows. According to experts, by the end of the year the share of new portable computers on the Russian market without a pre-installed operating system from Microsoft may increase to 80-90 percent.
The journalists stressed that earlier almost all laptops brought to the market had Windows pre-installed. So, in February 2022, the share of computers with OS from Microsoft was 60 percent, in June – 40 percent.
The material notes that the decrease in the share of computers with pre-installed Windows is associated with the departure of Microsoft from the Russian market. As a result, consumers have also become more interested in pirated versions of Windows.
In September, Microsoft limited the ability to upgrade to the new version of Windows 11 for residents of Russia. However, users can bypass the ban if they use a VPN service or download an update from alternative sources.
