“Kommersant”: Apple has not added support for VoLTE and VoWiFi on the iPhone in Russian networks
Some new features of Apple smartphones were not available in Russia. It is reported by “Kommersant”.
In a conversation with mobile operators, Kommersant journalists found out that Apple did not add support for the functionality of voice over LTE (VoLTE) and calls over Wi-Fi (VoWiFi) to smartphones operating in Russian networks. Vimpelcom (Beeline) explained that these options are limited by the device manufacturer.
Tele2 clarified that VoLTE and VoWiFi have been tested on smartphones since the beginning of the year, but after March, Apple stopped cooperating with Russian providers. MTS noted that they activated VoLTE on the iPhone 14, but they are not sure that the function will work stably on all models. Representatives of MegaFon confirmed the restrictions on VoWiFi, but noted that the operator’s subscribers can call through the eMotion application. The journalists tried to contact Apple, but did not receive a comment.
Representatives of VimpelCom emphasized that the lack of necessary settings for VoWiFi does not allow using the distribution of the Internet from the iPhone 14 to the full extent – customers have to manually enter the parameters. According to Denis Kuskov, CEO of TelecomDaily, about 60 percent of voice traffic in large cities passes through VoLTE.
Earlier, Citilink said that most often in 2022, Russians purchased smartphones from the Xiaomi brand. According to the retailer, the most popular devices for the year were devices worth 5-10 thousand rubles.
