iPhone Emergency SOS rolls out in UK, France, Germany and Ireland
Apple has expanded support for the Emergency SOS satellite feature outside of North America. This was reported on the corporation’s website.
Representatives of the company welcomed the launch of the satellite communication function in other regions. “Innovative technology, available on all iPhone 14 models, allows users to send messages to emergency services outside of cellular and Wi-Fi coverage,” the post reads.
The Emergency SOS feature will work on iPhone 14 users in the UK, France, Germany, and Ireland. “Emergency SOS makes satellite communications more accessible in case of emergency, which is very important,” said Gary Machado, CEO of the European Emergency Numbers Association.
Emergency SOS allows owners of new Apple smartphones to contact loved ones or emergency services in the absence of a cellular signal. The cost of a subscription to the service is not disclosed, but the company promised that access to the function will be free for two years from the date of purchase of the iPhone. Insiders have previously revealed that Samsung will roll out satellite connectivity on its devices in 2023.
In mid-September, TechCrunch journalists demonstrated how the satellite communication function works in new Apple smartphones. According to the authors, if the repeated attempt to dial 911 is unsuccessful, the phone will start searching for satellites – the corresponding interface will be displayed on the screen.
