WP: The FBI raised concerns about the implementation of end-to-end encryption in iCloud
The FBI praised Apple’s efforts to implement end-to-end encryption in the iCloud cloud service. This is reported by The Washington Post.
In a statement to WP, the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation said they were expressing concern that end-to-end encryption threatens the safety of citizens. “This hinders our work to protect the American people from criminal activities ranging from cyberattacks and violence against children to drug trafficking, organized crime and terrorism,” the agency said in a statement.
Representatives of the bureau noted that the measure taken by Apple would negatively affect the safety of US citizens. The organization emphasized that the FBI and other law enforcement agencies must have deliberate lawful access to electronic devices.
The journalists of the publication recalled that the FBI and Apple had many disagreements before. In 2016, the agency required Tim Cook’s company to unlock the San Bernardino shooter’s iPhone. The corporation refused to comply with the requirement, calling it an unprecedented step that threatens the safety of customers.
Apple announced Advanced Data Protection to encrypt data on iCloud in early December. After its introduction, the company will not be able to view encrypted confidential user data on servers.
