Apple has been heavily criticized for many years for its limited ability to repair its devices. A famous case may be recalled here “Error 53”

Currently, we can also repair iPhones outside the so-called. authorized service centers, and in April this year the company announced a launch in the USA , that enables customers self repair of devices – including the replacement of defective components.

Step two is placing an order for components at the Self Service Repair Store. Each of the parts available in the store has an individual code, and information about it can be found in the repair manual. Apple emphasizes that it decided to take this step precisely to make sure that customers actually look at the instructions before starting the repair.

The parts offered are the same – and the same price – as those used by Apple Authorized Service Providers. Replaced parts can be returned to Apple for remanufacturing or recycling, in many cases for a refund.

the company emphasizes in a statement.

Step three is to repair the device. At this stage, we can of course use our own tools and accessories (if we have any), but we can also rent them from Apple. The cost of such a repair kit is PLN 299, and the company rents it for a week. Among the tools available in the Self Service Repair program are, among others: screwdrivers, specialized cuvettes and presses for screens and batteries.

And here comes a creaking. If we decide, for example, to replace the battery in the iPhone ourselves, but we do not have the appropriate tools, then apart from the cost of the battery itself, we will also have to spend an additional PLN 299 on renting a repair kit, which will make all this fun no longer profitable for us in any way .

Apple does not hide, however, that Self Service Repair is designed no for the average user, but for enthusiasts and hobbyists. And such people usually already have a DIY kit and do not have to incur additional costs related to the purchase of tools.

The second issue that may raise doubts is the fact that each of the components that we buy in the Apple store will be paired only with a specific device. At the time of purchase, we are asked for the IMEI number of our device, which means that these parts cannot be used to repair another copy in the future.

Right to Repair. Consumers are fed up with constantly breaking devices

In recent years, in the USA, but also in Europe, the movement is gaining momentum “Right to Repair”. Its promoters want equipment manufacturers to be obliged, among others, to: to sell spare parts to any willing person, not only to authorized service stations, as well as to make repair manuals and diagnostic tools for their devices publicly available.
