The carbon returndoubling production this year, and the triggered use of gas, which is already the main source of electricity in 2022, have a high impact on the climate. Electric companies have already polluted more than the whole of last year and this year is not over yet.
As Carlos Martín, an Enerjoin expert, explains, “more gas is consumed because the rest of the technologies have contributed less, and more energy has to be produced to be able to share”. This has broken the trend of the last four years, when the electric companies had been reducing their emissions.
This exceptional situation is due to the war in Ukraine and the energy crisis, and in the words of the Minister for the Ecological Transition, Teresa Ribera, “it is something absolutely temporary, for reasons of energy security”.
The system has more hooked on fossil fuelswhile renewables have been losing weight: the drought has halved the contribution of hydroelectric power and wind power is being insufficient.
According to experts, this will a step back in the fight against climate change. In fact, pollution in Spain has risen 14% this year, according to data from the Sustainability Observatory, when the law requires reducing emissions by 23% by 2030.
In our country, electricity companies are the biggest polluters, followed by road transport, refineries, industry and air transport.
