Facebook to remove facial recognition system in videos and photos due to existing concern

In addition, the templates of more than 1,000 million user faces that the social network already has will be eliminated.

Facebook announced on Tuesday that it will eliminate its facial recognition system in photographs and videos in the coming weeks, given the existing “concern” about the effects that this technology may have on society.

In an entry on the official blog of Meta (the company that owns Facebook), the vice president for Artificial Intelligence, Jerome Pesenti, explained that with the change, those people who have the facial recognition option activated will no longer be identified in the images in the That appear.

In addition, the templates of more than 1,000 million user faces that the social network already has will be eliminated.

“The positive aspects of facial recognition must be valued in parallel with the growing social concern about this technology, especially when regulators have not yet set clear rules,” said Pesenti.

According to the company, more than a third of its daily active users (that is, who connect to Facebook at least once a day) have the facial recognition option activated, which allows them to be identified by name and surname in videos and photos using the use of artificial intelligence.

This technology, increasingly used and very popular, for example, in cell phones to unlock them or to access certain applications, is the subject of harsh criticism by activists and politicians around the world, who see it as a potential tool citizen control or discrimination.

Facebook’s decision will also affect its system for the visually impaired, which uses artificial intelligence to identify friends or relatives of blind people in photographs and inform them of their presence in the image.

With the change, this feature will no longer be operational.

Other functionalities that will disappear will be label recommendations for friends or family and notifications to Internet users when someone uploads a photo or video in which they appear to the network. (I)
