It will be hot before the next “Holy War” in the Handball Super League. All because the league decided not to accept Orlen Wisła Płock’s request to postpone the match from June 12. Earlier, the request of the inhabitants of Kielce was treated differently, changing the date of the meeting from May 14 to May 24.
It is certain – the “Holy War” will take place on May 24. Orlen Wisła will not be satisfied
On Monday, the League Commissioner Piotr Łebek confirmed that despite the promotion of Płock citizens to the Final Four of the European League, their last and decisive league match will not be postponed to June.
“The League Commissioner upheld his decision issued on April 15, 2022 regarding the date of the match between Orlen Wisła Płock and Łomża Vive Kielce. The meeting will be held on Tuesday, May 24 at 7.15 pm “- we read in the press release.
“In connection with the request submitted by the Orlen Wisła Płock club to change the date of the match between Orlen Wisła Płock and Łomża Vive Kielce, the League Commissioner decided to maintain the date of the match on May 24, 2022. The fact of participation in the European competitions raised by the club has already been taken into account in the decision setting the date of the match on May 24, 2022 “- added.
The importance of this match will be enormous. If Orlen Wisła Płock defeats Chrobry Głogów on Tuesday, it will be losing only three points to its biggest rival before the last round. Teams from Kielce and Płock were flawless this season, and the first “Holy War” played in Kielce, Łomża Vive won only 27:26.
What does it mean? That if Orlen Wisła Płock wins the rematch against Kielce on May 24 in its own hall by at least two goals, she will dethrone Łomża Vive after 11 years. Since 2009, the team from Kielce won 12 championship titles in 13 seasons and only in the 2010/11 season had to recognize the superiority of Wisła.
Originally, this match was postponed from May 14 to May 24 due to the request of Łomża Vive, who will play two quarter-final matches of the Champions League against French Montpellier on May 12-18. Orlen Wisła, in turn, will fight for victory in the European League. On May 28, in the semi-finals, her rival will be the host of the tournament – Benfica Lisbon.
“If the match is on May 24, we can play the other team”
Xavi Sabate, the coach of “Nafciarzy”, announced in an interview with the rmixx.pl portal that in the event that the citizens of Płock are rejected, they can play for the Polish championship with a second team, because Orlen Wisła wants to prepare as best as possible for the Final Four of the European League.
– We would like to go there to win. This is our goal. First of all, however, we need to know when the final match against Kielce will be. If it’s May 24, we’ll decide what’s best for our players. We take into account all the options: play with the other team or some players of the other team or not – the Spaniard threatened.
It is hard to expect that Sabate will fulfill its threats, but all indications are that there will still be more things ahead of the “Holy War” scheduled for May 24.
