Permanent representatives of the European Union today did not reach an agreement on the issue of sanctions against the Russian Federation.
The discussion is expected to continue in the coming days, reports Bloomberg. According to the agency, Hungary again blocked the EU proposal to ban the supply of Russian oil, and this prevented the approval of the sixth sanctions package. For it to be adopted, it must be agreed upon by all 27 EU countries.
In addition, Greece and Cyprus have not yet agreed to accept restrictions on oil transportation.
Earlier, the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, said that more time may be needed to agree on the refusal of oil from the Russian Federation by the end of 2022. However, she expressed confidence that the decision would eventually be made.
As a compromise, Brussels proposed a phase-out of Russian oil until the end of 2024 for Hungary and Slovakia, and until June for the Czech Republic.
In turn, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky noted that the EU countries did not come to a unified position on new restrictive measures against Russia.
