The shocking incident took place during the second set of Monday’s match of the first round of the Italian Open, in which he faced Lorenzo Sonego. Ultimately, the Canadian won 2: 1 (7: 6, 3: 6, 6: 3) and advanced to the next round.

Shapovalov furious. “I was just showing you the sign”

The second set of the match against Sony did not go well for Shapovalov. As the Canadian struggled to stay in the second set, there was an argument with the referee. Denis Shapovalov received a warning from the referee after he crossed the net. A moment later he became furious with the referee.

“I was just showing you the ball trace,” Shapovalov shouted furiously to the referee, defending his decision to cross the net. “These are the rules,” replied the judge, which irritated the Canadian even more. “No, it’s not,” he said to the referee.

Shapovalov towards the audience: “Shut the f *** up”

The behavior of the Canadian tennis player and his quarrel with the referee did not appeal to the audience gathered in the vicinity of the court. The fans booed Shapovalov, which upset him. The tennis player did not keep his nerves in check and shouted obscene words to the audience in English: “Shut the f *** up”, which means expressing emotions in Polish: “shut up, fucking murder”. The scene was perfectly captured by the camera.

The situation involving the Canadian is not his first controversial behavior. In 2017, he was disqualified after he smashed the ball in anger and struck a referee who had an orbital fracture. In January, after his defeat with Rafael Nadal in Shapovalov, he called one of the referees “corrupt”.
