The gray-haired Kantor found strength in the final jump to defeat his rivals, Mahalo Hawaii and Enemisado, in the 1,400 meters of the classic that, in posthumous tribute to the equestrian Xavier Aspiazu, took place last Sunday at the Miguel Salem Dibo racecourse.

It was a tremendous finish between these three horses, but it was not only the quality of the winning horse and the emotions it generated with his escorts, but also the momentum of Carlos Lozano, Kantor’s rider, who was able to close the race victorious in the time of 1 minute, 25 seconds and 81 hundredths.

At the beginning, Fire on Sand, Kantor and Inbox fought for the lead, who took advantage of Enemisado and Mahalo Hawaii, who despite these two persisted in their efforts to achieve supremacy.

For the final 600 meters, when Kantor already seemed to be taking off from his rivals, he had to end up on the right in a strong fight with Enemisado and Mahalo Hawaii, who managed to overtake him and take over the lead. But Kantor charged again and in a dramatic finish he was the winner with a slight advantage over Mahalo Hawaii, who came second fighting until the end.

Kantor gave the victory to the new Spanglish stable and there was applause for his rider Lozano for his great work. Finally, Xavier Aspiazu Aguilera, former president of the Homeowners Association, was remembered, whose relatives presented the trophy to the stud winner.

Meanwhile, the Preferred filly was the big surprise in the afternoon special at 1,200 meters. La tordilla prevailed marking the time of 1 minute, 14 seconds and 45 hundredths, beating Muchacho; Preferred belongs to stud Chipipe.

Then, in the 1,400 meters of the seventh competition, Wanijai triumphed under the leadership of Josué Mora, marking 1 minute, 27 seconds, 18 hundredths for that distance. Wanijai narrowly defeated Mykonos in the photo final.

Other winners: María Nomás, in the first; Police, in the second; Tutto Bene, in the third; Maraka, in the fourth; and Montubia, in the eighth. All these tests were in 1,100 meters. (D)
